Shephard Group, Washington, DC March 30 – 31
Search and Rescue 2009, an annual conference sponsored by the Shephard Group, will be held in Tyson’s Corner, VA. The conference will feature speakers from diverse regions of the world presenting on search missions and how those missions were planed, organized and executed. Management and coordination issues will also be in focus. Co-sponsored by the US Coast Guard and the Canadian Coast Guard.

VASARCO, Virginia USA April 24 - 26
The Virginia Search and Rescue Council’s annual conference includes topics on technical rescue and new technologies, K-9 and equine sessions, and SAR challenges such as lost person behavior.

Pennsylvania SAREX April 29 – May 3
The Pennsylvania Search and Rescue Council is putting on this SAR-EX with major emphasis on K-9 courses, plus several NASAR classes for certification.

WASAR, Washington USA May 15 – 17
This year’s conference is hosted by Lewis County . Emphasis is on HANDS ON training for all disciplines, such as tracking, water, air, horse, K-9, rope, special equipment. Chris Young will be presenting two workshops: “Introduction to Search and Search Management in the Urban Environment” and “Interview and Investigation – Techniques for Search and Rescue Responders.”
National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR), Arkansas USA May 28 - 30
NASAR’s annual conference will be held in Little Rock, Arkansas . Pre-conference courses include lost person behavior and SAR dog sessions. New management track courses this year include a new one by Chris Young entitled Searching in the Age of Online Social Networks” (e.g., Facebook, MySpace), probability mapping, and youth SAR programs. A pre-conference course on Lost Person Behavior will be offered by Robert Koester on May 26 & 27. This course also fulfills pre-requisites for the Lost Person Behavior Train the Trainer workshop currently being developed. Colorado, USA July 16 – 19
The Colorado Search and Rescue Board hosts the conference at Western State College in Gunnison. Although the website currently does not yet have information about the conference courses or registration, the link is provided so you can check for updates.

California SAREX, USA September 11 - 13
The California State Office of Emergency Services hosts this SAREX at Yosemite National Park. Chris Young will be presenting two workshops: “Introduction to Search and Search Management in the Urban Environment” and “Interview and Investigation – Techniques for Search and Rescue Responders.” No additional information is yet available, but you can check the website below for more information in the future.

SAR City, California USA October 9 - 11
SAR City, billed as the largest SAR school on the West Coast, brings together rescue, fire, medical and law enforcement personnel for a full weekend of training and information sharing. Northwest SARCon, Oregon USA October 15 – 18
Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts, a staunch supporter of SAR, and has spearheaded the Northwest SARCon. The 2009 conference will be held in Clackamas County again. No specific information is yet provided for 2009, but you can take a look at what happened at last year’s successful conference. Check the website below for updates.

Canada SARSCENE Is Postponed Until 2010
The annual Canadian search and rescue conference, SARSCENE, is taking this year to revamp the conference, improve content, and offer more targeted educational tracks and information sharing opportunities for volunteers, SAR managers, team leaders, law enforcement and other specific groups. The conference will resume in the fall of 2010 in Regina , Saskatchewan , and will be hosted by The Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers (SARSAV) and the Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing, Government of Saskatchewan.
The National SAR Secretariat of Canada welcomes comments and suggestions. You may email sarscene@nss.gc.ca.

Lost Person Behavior Train the Trainer Course in Development
dbS Productions will soon announce a train the trainer workshop in Lost Person Behavior. This workshop will prepare participants to present all or parts of a two-day Lost Person Behavior course. It will include participation in an actual two-day LPB course and a third day of in-depth instruction on course contents. For more information about the Train the Trainer, contact info@dbs-sar.com.
